If you are having sex with the person,you need to find out if you want to marry them or not if the relationship is going in that direction. If you have doubts,then let go.

if you know you want to spend with that other person forever and you know that person for awhile. and you feel comfortable with that person and know how that person is like.
After 6 years with this person you are married(especially if you live in a common law state) If you still haven't made it official there is a reason. In the meantime you are missing out on the formal benefits and protections of marriage. But after six years I bet you have all of the headaches of a formal marriage.
